The History of Alpha Omicron Omega...
The history of Alpha Omicron Omega Chapter, Institute, WV, mirrors the national mission and is dedicated to the ideals of our original founders: merit, culture, womanliness, sisterliness, equality, justice for all, and a service to all mankind. Our legacy began in October 1929 by one of our beloved founders of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Sara Meriwether Nutter. The desire to establish a graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha in the Charleston-Institute area was motivated by the need for the local undergraduate chapter, Nu Chapter at West Virginia State Collegiate Institute (name was changed in 1929 to West Virginia State College and in 2004 to West Virginia State University), to carry on an appropriate program without graduate dominance. Likewise, there was the more obvious need to unite inactive graduate members in the surrounding areas into a working organization for the purpose of promoting the total program of the Sorority.
It was recorded in minutes of the Eleventh Annual Boule of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority held in Nashville, TN, that the admission of new chapters was to be voted on during the general session. At this conference which took place in December of 1928, Nu Chapter was one of three undergraduate chapters that filed an application for a graduate chapter. Upon review of the application it was accepted by the general membership. After the vote was approved it was under Sara Meriwether Nutter’s leadership that the chapter was chartered. It was formally organized in October 1929 at Institute, WV, and the charter was issued on November 7, 1929. The charter members were as follows: Theodora Fonteneau Rutherford who was elected president and served for seven years, Edmonia Walden Grider, recording secretary, Awaneda Pack Hairston, treasurer, Angie Turner King, corresponding secretary, and Sadie Gardner Washington, hostess.

Alpha Omicron Omega recently completed a chronicle of its history titled, Through the Years: Alpha Omicron Omega's Timeless History. The book details the chapter's charter in 1928 by founder Soror Sarah Meriwether Nutter, and the important role the chapter has played locally and nationally in the lives of African Americans and on society as a whole. Special appreciation is extended to Anita Grant who spent endless hours on the chapter's Timeless History.
